Job Description: Are you looking for an opportunity to work for one of the most progressive leaders in public safety in Canada? The Surrey Fire Service is recruiting for a Fire Prevention Officer that will be responsible for performing a number of duties that are identified by statute under the Fire Services Act. The successful applicant will oversee the administration and enforcement of applicable City, Provincial, and Federal, By-laws, Codes, Acts, Guidelines and Legislation.
Duties: The Fire Prevention Officer liaises with individuals, owners and operators of commercial establishments, Insurance agencies, and RCMP investigators through fire investigations, fire safety inspections, compliance investigations, public education sessions, and training seminars to raise awareness and build proactive strategies in addressing fire prevention issues.
Skill Requirements: To be considered, you will possess the following minimum job requirements:

• Grade 12 education
• Valid BC Driver’s license with a safe driving record
• NFPA 1001 Firefighter Certificate or equivalent
• NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector & Plans Examiner or equivalent
• Ability to read and understand architectural, civil mechanical and electrical drawings with an established competency achieved
• NFPA 1033 Fire Investigator or equivalent
• Fire Protection Technician Certificate (ASTTBC) or an equivalent certificate such as;
o Portable extinguishers
o Unit Emergency Lighting
o Fire Alarm Systems
o Water based Fire Protection Systems
o Commercial Kitchen Exhaust Cleaning
o Special Fire Suppression Systems (pre-engineered)
o Special Fire Suppression Systems (custom-engineered
o Stationary Fire Pumps (minimum of 40 inspections and testing)
o Smoke Control Systems
o Generator Systems (minimum of 40 inspections and testing)
• Electrical Fundamentals
• BC Fire Code Certificate
• BC Building Code Course
• Minimum one year experience in fire service public education and or Fire fighting
• Minimum Four (4) years of experience in a Fire Prevention role (LAFC) in relation to interpretation and application of the BC Fire code
• Able to be registered as a Local Assistant to the Fire Commissioner (LAFC) limited powers of a peace officer
• Strong proficiency in computer communications and administrative work
• Excellent report writing skills
• Experience with Office of the Fire Commissioner compliance reporting
• Understanding of the BC Fire Services Act relating to Fire Prevention investigations, responsibilities, liabilities of the LAFC and obligations of the City of Surrey

The following qualifications would be considered as asset:
• NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector
• NFPA 1033 Fire Investigator
• NFPA 1035 Fire & Life Safety Educator
• NFPA 1021 Fire Officer I & II certificate or equivalent
• Fire Protection Engineer
• Computer software experience with knowledge in use of:
o FDM Records Management
o Amanda
o Cityworks
o GIS/COSMOS
• Building and construction inspection experience
• Conflict resolution skills
