Under the supervision of the Intervention Programs Manager, the Youth Counsellor provides professional counselling to youth and their families aimed at preventing and reducing criminal and negative behaviour in 9-17 year-old City of Surrey youth.

RESPONSIBILITIES
???As the Youth Counsellor, you will meet with youth and/or parents to assess underlying reasons for a youth???s involvement in criminal activity and/or risky behaviour.
???You will provide early intervention through short-term counselling as well as facilitate referrals to appropriate community resources in order to guide a youth toward healthy decision-making. Promoting behavioural change through rapport-building, education, skill development, and community partnerships will be key.
???You will be responsible for your own case management, case co-ordination, assessment of youth and family risk factors, and collaborative development of individualized program plans. Recording ongoing confidential progress reports of counselling sessions through summaries and recommendations will be required.
???You will be expected to provide professional guidance to other community professionals, families, and RCMP members as well as offer feedback (within confidentiality limits) to referring RCMP members regarding the outcome of each case.
???You will represent the program on community committees and at various professional agency meetings. You will connect with other youth counsellors in your unit at regular meetings and as needed in order to strategize about case planning efforts.
???You will perform other job related duties as required which could include participating in community and/or detachment events.

QUALIFICATIONS
???You will have completed Grade 12 supplemented by a University Degree in Social Work, Psychology, or a related field from a recognized post-secondary institution plus a minimum of two years relevant experience working with youth, counselling, or corrections;
???A equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

A RCMP enhanced security clearance and a valid BC Driver???s license with a safe driving history are required.
