Job Description: Employees in this position are responsible for coordinating and performing a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks related to parks operations. Under the direction of the supervisor, they are responsible for assisting with the planning, designing, and implementing of maintenance programs for sports fields, irrigation systems, and landscape areas; this will vary according to the season.
Duties: Perform a variety of duties related to sports turf management and care for the athletic field turf, such as turf grass cutting, aerating, fertilizing, top dressing, turf remediation, and sports field line marking.

Perform routine maintenance tasks on artificial field turf.

Assist supervisor in the preparation of annual and seasonal work plans for assigned functional areas of responsibility.

Operate, maintain and perform minor repairs on irrigation systems.

Design, install and maintain flower, shrubs and median beds, including plant selection and procurement.

Assist supervisor with a variety of urban forestry duties for parks, green spaces and street trees.

Perform hands on maintenance work in all weather conditions, such as snow clearing, weeding and planting.

Perform inspections and assessments and prepare and maintain field, tree and maintenance records; prepare related reports and analyses.

Provide technical guidance and direction to parks personnel and volunteers in the proper maintenance and care of shrubs, trees, flowers, and groundcovers.

Participate in the orientation of new and returning staff.

Assist supervisor in the development and implementation of new policies and procedures.

As necessary, perform the duties of classifications of a lower pay grade working in the division.
Educational Requirements: Grade 12 (or equivalent), supplemented by completion of a certificate or diploma in a recognized turf management or horticulture program, or in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Pesticide Applicator’s License
Skill Requirements: Sound knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in turf maintenance and the care of athletic fields.

Sound knowledge of irrigation systems, including routine maintenance, programming, trouble shooting and minor repairs.

Working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in performing horticulture and landscaping tasks.

Knowledge of the hazards and safe work practices and standards applicable to the work performed.

Ability to design, install and maintain landscape features such as planting beds, medians, planters and hanging baskets.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts, and to communicate tactfully and effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Ability to use a variety of computer software and office equipment related to the work.

Ability to work with minimum supervision.

Skill in using a variety of hand and power tools and equipment related to the work.

Sufficient physical condition, strength and stamina to perform the required duties in all weather conditions.

Minimum of one year experience in general parks or grounds maintenance, horticulture or arboriculture work, including experience in the programming, maintenance and repairing of irrigation systems.

Experience with the maintenance and operation of a variety of landscape related equipment.

Valid Class 5 Drivers License
Salary: The 2018 hourly rate is $30.67 plus a comprehensive benefit package. We also offer a 4-day work week, 9 hours per day.
