Job Description: Employees in this position perform a variety of forestry operational, maintenance and servicing tasks related to the Municipal Forest including performing activities related to the recreation programs.
Duties: Falling and bucking of trees, right of way clearing, setting chokers and harvesting felled trees and timber.

Operating and maintaining a variety of forestry equipment including a rubber-tired skidder, excavator, cat dozer, rock truck and power saw or similar equipment in conventional and environmentally sensitive areas.

Constructing and maintaining forestry roads, bridges and culverts and assisting with road right-of-way clearing.

Performing activities related to fire protection including slash burning, debris disposal and fire fighting as required.

Perform fire patrols and inform the public of fire controls in the Municipal Forest.

Constructing, maintaining and inspecting recreation trails, campsites and areas in the Municipal Forest including garbage cleanup.

Erecting and maintaining signs and forestry road gates in the Municipal Forest.

Assisting with inventory, timber cruising and layout activities.

Responding to public and staff information inquiries on matters related to the Forestry Department.
Assisting to provide training to other employees.

Providing information related to the performance assessment of new or associated staff.
Assisting to develop policies and procedures.

Assisting in the implementation of an environmental management system program or other forestry certification systems.

Preparing and maintaining accurate records for production and machinery operation.

Advising fellow workers regarding safe and productive work methods on job sites, and consulting with supervisor regarding any concerns in this area.

Maintaining an up to date knowledge relative to forestry safety requirements, and related matters.
Educational Requirements: Minimum of 3 years experience in a coastal forestry environment.

BC Forest Safety Council Faller Certification

Valid B.C. Driver's License for equipment operated (currently Class 5)

Valid Level 1 First Aid Certification and Transportation Endorsement

Ministry of Forests Fundamentals of Fire Fighting (S-100+Series Training)
Skill Requirements: Thorough knowledge of coastal falling and bucking practices, recognition of tree species and grades and the ability to process timber to maximize value.

Knowledge of the practical aspects of cable and ground forest harvesting methods as well as road, log bridge and forest trail construction and culvert installation methods.

Knowledge of the practical aspects of road, log bridge, culvert and trail maintenance.

Knowledge of the practical aspects of fire protection, debris burning and disposal.

Ability to safely operate and do basic servicing on a rubber-tired skidder, excavator, cat dozer, rock truck, power saws or other forestry equipment.

Ability to assist and gather basic data for inventory, timber cruising and layout functions.
Ability to keep accurate written records related to production, machinery operation, the environmental management system and forest certification.

Knowledgeable in current applicable Occupational Health and Safety standards in a forestry operation.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts and to communicate tactfully and effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Ability to undertake physical activities, which require considerable stamina and agility.
Salary: $34.87 per hour plus an excellent benefit package upon completion of probation.
